• SIGNATURE: The Hill Course’s par-3 4th can play either straight downhill to a green backdropped by an ornate rock wall and fronted by a lake, or to an alternative putting surface situated on a plateau with a ravine short and OB long. The former is shorter, but either way, club selection is crucial … and the vistas spectacular.
• GETTING THERE: Traveling northeast out of Saigon on Highway 1A, the 45-minute journey takes you through Bien Hoa City, across the Dong Nai River, and past a firing range.
• EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED: Late risers and/or bucket-sweater fear not — the Lake Course is outfitted completely with light stanchions, making night golf a viable option.
• BURGER KING: When it comes to clubhouse cheeseburgers, Long Thanh’s beast beats all comers in Vietnam. So say a preponderance of the country’s golf-mad expats.
• BORDER CROSSING: Le Van Kiem is more than Long Thanh’s owner. He’s also, it seems, a lover of Laos. In late 2008, he announced his company would invest $1 billion in a golf-course project in the capital of Vientiane. |
